Club Drive - Joliet to Columbus

While the morning started off grey with a bit of drizzle, by the time we met up at 9am the sky had begun to clear and the need for wipers had disappeared. We caravanned over to Laurel and met a few members there and hit the road with 10 cars. The drive to Joilet was uneventful except for the entertainment provided by a pickup who felt that we were holding him back, causing him to leap frog through our group at a fairly high rate of speed.

We made a short stop in Joliet to check conditions and then did that beautiful drive on Highway 421 to Columbus. The scenery is spectacular as the road curves and rolls through the hills providing plenty to keep the drivers occupied.

We stopped at the 307 Grill in Columbus and we were able to line our cars up out front. A local resident, Duke, stopped by to talk cars, he has a V8-powered MG and, it turns out, that he just sold, yesterday, a '63 Renault Caravelle that a few of us had been watching on Craigslist. He seemed happy to find similarly minded enthusiasts and plans to join our ranks. Welcome, Duke.

We had some food and refreshments in the 307 which was pretty quiet until a couple dozen motorcyclists (on a poker run for charity) showed up. Anyway, the food and drink were good but it was time to hit the road. We took the frontage road(s) back to Park City where Greg, in his red E-Type, took the lead and showed us an out-of-the-way set of backroads from Park City to Laurel. Very enjoyable driving.

Members turned off as we passed their routes home and the whole trip was over about 2pm. I logged about 105 miles.
